A breakfast nook can be a wonderful spot in the home for enjoying morning coffee with family and friends before the work day begins or unwinding at day’s end. The breakfast nook is usually smaller than a typical dining area. Some breakfast nooks are separate from the kitchen while others are part of the kitchen space. Designing a comfortable and stylish breakfast nook can be a lot of fun. You can design a space that is perfect for your family with just a few tips for top decorators.

Breakfast Nook Walls

The wall color that you choose for your breakfast nook should be based on the size of the nook. If you have a small nook, then think about painting your walls in a white shade or pastel color. This will make the breakfast nook look bigger than it really is. If you choose a color that is the same color as or a lighter shade than the rest of your kitchen, then the eye will travel naturally from one space to the next. A large room will lend itself to a more defined look. If the kitchen walls are also painted, consider installing bead-board paneling that is painted a couple of shades darker than the existing colors found in the kitchen. This will have the effect of making the nook stand out while keeping its cozy look overall. Trim the breakfast nook space with white molding for an added level of definition.

Breakfast Nook Ceilings

For breakfast nooks with high ceilings, you can cozy the nook up somewhat by painting the ceiling a darker color than the walls. This lowers the ceiling from a visual standpoint. The way that you choose to finish the ceiling depends on the decorative style of the rest of your kitchen and surrounding spaces. For rustic décor, think about installing beams for an open beam ceiling, or even installing paneling or bead-board on the ceiling. The addition of crown molding on a ceiling that is just plain plaster can bring a traditional look to the space, or you can choose to cover it in tin for a Victorian-era look.

Breakfast Nook Floors

To really define the breakfast nook space and make it stand out from the rest of your kitchen, consider installing different flooring. For example, if the kitchen has tile flooring, you can add warmth to the breakfast nook by installing a wood floor just in the breakfast nook area. A painted floor in a checkerboard-design can be ideal, especially if you are decorating your space in cottage or country décor. Another option is to anchor the table with an area rug.

Breakfast Nook Windows

Most breakfast nooks have a window or group of windows that provides valuable lighting for the space. You can dress up the windows in the space with blinds that can be rolled up or down, depending on your mood. If you are concerned with privacy, then simply add drapes over top sheer panels. That way, when you open the drapes, the sheers are still in place to give you privacy while letting light in.

Complete the makeover with bistro theme wall art like coffee cup wall art or Italian metal wall art café style hangings that provide personality and ambiance.
