A home office should be a place that is comfortable, well-decorated, and organized. Those working at home are likely to be more productive if their surroundings are pleasing to the eye and if documents and necessities are organized and easy to find. A home office does not have to look like a workplace cubicle to inspire creativity and productivity, and decorating a home office does not have to cost a small fortune. It is possible to begin decorating a home office while sticking to a decorating budget, and by repurposing ordinary items, a simple home office can be transformed into a space with style and functionality.

Inspire with Color

Office supply stores have everything necessary to set up a work space at home, but what they cannot sell is personalization and character. Only you can add decorating touches such as beautiful black metal wall art that will make your home office a place of inspiration that will encourage you to get the job done, with or without that cup of morning coffee.

One of the least expensive ways to begin decorating a home office on a budget is with paint, and adding color is a great way to begin personalizing a work space. Select warm colors that invigorate the mind and body, and avoid cool colors that are suppressive. If you want to add color to the space without making it look overdone, consider painting the walls a warm neutral color and add red, yellow, or orange painted metal wall art accents that will give the room energy that will extend throughout the space.

Add More Storage Space to an Ordinary Desk

When sticking to a budget, buying just the right desk is not always an option. Desks are available in all price ranges and styles to meet every budget and decorating preference, but to have a desk with added space for files and storage, the cost can be astronomical. It is not necessary to buy a desk that costs far more than you are prepared to spend. An ordinary desk can be transformed into a work space with sections for organizing and filing papers and supplies. Purchase budget priced ready-to-assemble stacking shelf units, or make them using reclaimed wood. Place the finished shelf units on top of both sides of the desk, leaving plenty of work space in the center. Label the shelves and use them for storing paperwork and other important work-related items. This budget desk will be as useful as more expensive desks sold in stores.

Create Magnetic Note Board with Paint

Did you know that magnetic additive can be mixed in with paint primer and applied to walls? The additive is budget priced compared to the cost of ready-made magnetic boards that are not nearly as colorful or as stylish. Use a straightedge and painter’s tape to create a magnetic area directly behind or next to the desk. Mix the additive with primer according to product label instructions. It will take approximately four coats to create a strong magnetic surface. Allow the primer to dry completely in between coats, and cover the last layer with a paint color of your choice. Once the paint is dry you will have an amazing magnetic surface for holding notes, photos, and artwork to personalize your home office.

Choose Decorative Containers for Holding Office Supplies

If you want to have a truly original and inspiring home office, avoid using typical office supplies such as metal canister-style pen and pencil holders. Instead of using typical office supplies that are not exactly cheap, consider using woven baskets, small colorful vases, or empty containers with vintage labels. These budget ideas will add more style and personality than anything you could buy in a home office store. Use containers that catch your eye and encourage organization and limitless creativity. When decorating further, keep in mind that it is your home office, and you can do what you want to!
