Reinvent Your Living Room on a Budget
68
Remodeling can make a room have a whole new vibe, especially taking a room that is dull or outdated to modern and fantastic. Contrary to popular belief based on television shows and high-priced brand names at retail stores, you really can reinvent your living room on a budget. It just takes some dedication, savvy shopping, a great idea for deals, and the knowledge of where to shop and when.
Clearance Sales
Almost all furniture stores, home decor retailers, and online decorating stores have clearance sales on items that are not as popular or those that are being discontinued. Your first thought may be that unwanted items have to be ugly ones, but this is rarely the case. These are typically items that are being done away with so that other new items can take their shelf or floor space, and not necessarily because they did not sell well. As new items become available based on a variety of factors, the old has to be liquidated so that the store still profits.
An Eye for Deals
Watch for clearance sales that are not true bargains though, because sometimes even the markdown price is higher than a similar brand that looks just as good but costs less. You do not always have to buy the cheapest brand or item, but there is a lot of satisfaction in knowing that you got a great deal on a good brand name that is not much higher in cost than the lesser known brand. When the clearance price of the brand name reaches a level that is on par with the lesser brand’s regular price, it is time to snatch up an item that you have been watching.
Stick With a Theme
Themed living rooms are far easier to shop for and decorate than you might think, and they can save you a lot of budget room. Reinvent your living room with a theme that fits your budget and still looks fabulous, either by color (i.e. the green room) or style (Mediterranean theme) for best results. As you shop, look for items that fit your theme and ignore everything else or you will wind up with a collection of random items that you may never use; there is no use looking at beach metal wall art if your living room has an English country theme, for example. This is just wasted money in most cases, and the item just gathers dust in a box, on a shelf, up in the attic or in a closet while you figure out where to put it or forget about it. Keep an open mind however: Just because something is sold as metal art for bathroom walls that does not mean that it may not still be appropriate for the living room depending on the theme and design.
Shop Online
Some people believe that shipping costs are too high to do the shopping online, but this is only true for large, bulky furniture. Lighter, more compact objects such as wall art and other accessories cost very little to ship in most cases, and if you find something that is a great deal without ever having to leave home you have saved yourself both time and money. Gas is far more expensive than shipping these days, and online stores usually have a far better variety of items to fit any style anyway.
