Chandeliers are not new sources of lighting by any stretch of the imagination, and they have been around for hundreds of years in some form. In the beginning, they were designed for use with candles, but as technology advanced, candles have been replaced with electric bulbs. The modern chandelier is a simple and clean alternative to other forms of modern lighting even, and there are many styles and decor choices to consider.

The two most important factors to think about are the look and environment you are trying to create with your modern chandelier.  A modern look is sometimes not as critical as keeping it simple, although oftentimes a combination of the two are the best choice for the space. Consider the following information and examples as you begin to narrow down the right type of modern chandelier for the room that you are planning to update, renovate, or design.

A Modern Look

Although the basic function of a chandelier is often to light a particular room adequately, you also want something that offers aesthetic value to the space. Modern looks range from the beautiful teardrop styles that are elegant for formal use to the more casual looks that present something special for everyday dining and entertaining. Shapes and colors are fairly new additions to the modern chandelier, since there are now so many options available to meet your decor needs.

You do not have to find something that is the traditional chandelier style, and there are many unique chandeliers available. Wire lamps, tear drops, globes, and similar ideas are great examples of something out of the ordinary that you can find with a little bit of determination, but those are only a few of the many ideas out there. If you need help finding something perfect for your space, consider a simple and clean basic chandelier in a modern style, such as a square look. It will complement just about any style and won’t compete with contemporary Italian metal wall art or other modern furnishings and home wall art.

Keeping it Simple

Unless the room’s focal point is going to be the modern chandelier, keep it simple and clean by making a basic, classic choice. You do not need a lot of glam and glitz if you want the centerpiece to be a different part of the room, and in cases like this you often need only something contemporary but simple.  The cleanest and simplest look for a modern chandelier is a basic metal showpiece with clean lines and cool metallic shades.

A great example of a simple, clean, modern chandelier is a brushed nickel chandelier with a square or rectangular design and eco-friendly soft light bulbs. You want just enough lighting to be sufficient for the space without overwhelming it. Overwhelming the space will detract from the aesthetic value in the room, and will make your piece seem less spectacular overall. Save the modern artwork chandelier styles for those rooms where the chandelier is the centerpiece or focal point, where they will be most beneficial and really bring that wow factor to the room.
