There are many different ways to define the style of a room. From furniture styles to fabrics, paintings and prints to sun metal sculptures or metal butterfly wall art, there is no shortage of materials and methods of decorating that can make a room unique. One of the best ways to really create a strong style in any room is with lighting. In the living room, you can define the room's style by the lamps and lights that you choose to use.

Track Lighting

When you think about a living room, what comes to mind? If you are progressive and modern in your decorating style, track lighting might be one of the first thoughts that pops up. Track lighting is often used in more formal living rooms, or to accent tall bookshelves that line the wall. Just as there are many different styles of lighting, there are many different styles of track lighting. If you want to create a modern, minimalist look, go for track lighting that blends in with the color of the ceiling. If you want more of a library look, choose lights that stand out in a conservative way. No matter what style you use, track lighting can be very beneficial for highlighting paintings and other types of wall art.

Table Lamp

Another option for your living room is to add table lamps. Be sure that your table lamps fit the size of the table that they are placed on. Table lamps can come in just about any form that you want. There are ornate lamps with custom made shades to match your furniture fabric. There are cool, sleek lamp bases with subdued shades that provide soft lighting. In fact, no matter what type of decor you have, there are table lamps to match it. Even in a minimalist decor, table lamps help to soften the light in the room while also providing enough light to read by.

Standing Lamps

When it comes to finding just the right lamp for a corner or other challenging decorating space, a standing lamp is ideal. In a living room, it can set the tone for the style very quickly, because of its prominent size and features. The more modern the lamp is, the more modern the rest of the room's decor should be. If your living room is more traditional in style, try to stay away from standing lamps that are made out of shiny metals, as those tend to be better suited for contemporary decors. Another great idea to consider when choosing a standing lamp is its ability to dim. By adjusting the brightness of the light, you can soften or strengthen the light in the room. This makes a standing lamp ideal for use during parties, as well as intimate gatherings.

If the rest of your decor is mismatched and undefined, pull the room together with a cohesive lighting look. By using lamps strategically throughout the room, you ensure that those who use the space will have enough light, but that the room will not be overpowered by harsh bulbs. Incorporate your sense of style into your lighting fixtures for a bright decor.
